This calculator reports age the way almost every official form, medical record and legal document does: as the number of completed years since the date of birth. A completed year is one that has actually finished. If you were born on 15 June 2000, then on 14 June 2026 you have finished twenty-five years and started your twenty-sixth, so your age is 25. The following day, on 15 June 2026, that twenty-sixth year completes and your age becomes 26. Nothing about the calculation rounds up, and nothing counts a year that is still in progress.
That boundary is where most manual age calculations go wrong. Subtracting the birth year from the current year gives the right answer only after the birthday has passed in that year; before it, the result is one year too high. It is a small error with real consequences, because eligibility rules are almost always written against completed years: a driving licence, a pension, a discounted fare, a vaccination schedule, an age-restricted contract. This calculator handles the boundary explicitly: the age increases on the birthday itself, not the day before and not at the start of the calendar year.
Those thresholds are not the same everywhere English is spoken, which is worth checking before trusting a number you remember. In the United States the federal minimum drinking age is 21 while voting, jury service and most contracts begin at 18. The United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand put nearly everything at 18, though the UK sets 17 for a full car licence and Australia varies the learner age by state. Insurance adds one more twist: many life and health policies in the US and the UK are underwritten on age nearest birthday rather than age last birthday, so an applicant more than six months past a birthday is quoted at the next age up. This calculator always reports age last birthday, because that is what statutes, passports and application forms mean by age.
Once the completed years are settled, the remainder is split into months and then days. The months are counted as calendar months, not fixed 30-day blocks, which is the only way the arithmetic can stay consistent across a February and a July. The leftover days are then measured from the most recent monthly anniversary of the birth date up to the reference date. So a result of "25 years, 2 months, 6 days" means: twenty-five birthdays have passed, two further calendar months have completed since the last one, and six days have elapsed since that monthly mark.
Splitting into calendar months forces a decision about the end of the month, because not every month has a matching day. Someone born on 31 January has no monthly anniversary in February at all. This calculator clamps to the last available day of the target month, so from 31 January the one-month mark falls on 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year. The alternative, letting the date spill over into 3 March, would push the month count backwards and produce a result that looks plainly wrong. Clamping keeps every month between two consecutive anniversaries exactly one month long, which is what people expect when they read the output.
The same rule settles the classic leap-year question. Someone born on 29 February 2000 has a real birthday only once every four years, so in a common year the calculator treats 28 February as the anniversary and the age increases on that day. This matches the convention used by most administrative systems, which will not leave a person a year older than the calendar allows. In a leap year the birthday falls on 29 February as normal, and the arithmetic is unchanged.
The next birthday shown in the results is always strictly after the reference date. If today happens to be your birthday, the calculator points at next year, not today. That choice is deliberate: a "next birthday" that has already arrived would leave zero days to count down to and would tell you nothing. Reading the results on your birthday, you will see the new age in the years line and a date twelve months out in the next birthday line. That pairing is correct, not a bug.
The total days figure counts every calendar day from the date of birth up to and including the reference date boundary, leap days included. It is genuinely useful for the things that months and years handle badly: tracking an infant in weeks, checking a residency or visa day-count, or working out how many days remain before an age threshold is reached. Because it is a plain day count with no month arithmetic in it, it is also the easiest number to verify by hand against a calendar.
School cohorts are the other common case where a date of birth is read against a fixed cut-off instead of against today. England and Wales group children by a school year running from 1 September to 31 August, so an August birthday means being the youngest in the class and a September birthday the oldest. Scotland cuts at the end of February, Australia and New Zealand set the date state by state, and in the United States the cut-off is a district decision that ranges from June to December. None of that changes how age is calculated; it changes which date you should be calculating against. Put the cut-off day into the reference field instead of today, and the years line tells you which side of the line a child falls on.
A note on entering the dates. The fields use the ISO format YYYY-MM-DD to avoid the ambiguity between 03/04 meaning 3 April in most of the world and 4 March in the United States. The reference date defaults to today but is fully editable, so you can just as easily ask how old someone was on a particular day in the past, or how old they will be when a future date arrives. If the birth date is set after the reference date the calculator refuses to guess and reports an error instead.
The best use of these numbers is to read each line against the rule you are actually up against. Take the completed years for anything written as an age limit, the total days for anything counted in days, and the next birthday to see how long the current answer stays true. If the age lands within a few days of a threshold, put the deadline itself in the reference field and read the result again. The only age a rule cares about is the age on the day the rule is applied, and that is rarely today.

- Do I turn a year older on my birthday or the day after?
- In this calculator the age increases on the birthday itself. Someone born on 15 June 2000 is 25 on 14 June 2026 and 26 on 15 June 2026. This is the convention used by everyday speech and by most official forms in English-speaking countries. A few legal systems technically fix the moment at the end of the preceding day, but for practical purposes the result is the same on any full calendar day.
- Why does an insurance application say I am a year older than this calculator does?
- Because some life and health policies are priced on age nearest birthday rather than age last birthday. Under that basis anyone more than six months past their last birthday is rated at the next age up, which is why a quote can arrive a year ahead of every other document you filled in that week. It is an underwriting convention, not a different definition of age. Passports, pensions, licences and statutory age limits all use completed years, which is what this calculator reports.
- What age does someone born on 29 February have in a non-leap year?
- This calculator treats 28 February as the anniversary in common years, so the age increases on 28 February and not on 1 March. That is the more common administrative convention and it guarantees a person gains exactly one year per calendar year. In leap years the birthday falls on 29 February as usual, so no year is ever skipped or counted twice.
- Why does the next birthday show a date a full year away on my birthday?
- Because the next birthday is defined as the first anniversary strictly after the reference date. On the day itself the birthday has already arrived, so the next one is twelve months later. If it returned today instead, the countdown would read zero days and carry no information. The years line will already show your new age, which confirms the birthday has been counted.
- How are the months counted for someone born at the end of a month?
- By calendar months, with clamping to the last day of shorter months. Someone born on 31 January reaches the one-month mark on 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year, instead of spilling over into March. Without this rule the month count would jump backwards for every short month and the split into years, months and days would stop being consistent.
- Can I calculate my age on a date in the past or in the future?
- Yes. The reference date defaults to today, but you can set it to any date at or after the date of birth. Use a past date to check how old someone was at a specific event, or a future date to see what age will have been reached by a deadline. The only rule is that the reference date cannot come before the date of birth, which would produce a negative age.
- Why does the total days number not match years multiplied by 365?
- Because leap years add an extra day roughly every four years, so a year averages a little over 365 days. Over 25 years that is around six extra days. The total days figure counts actual calendar days from the birth date, leap days included, which is why it is the right number to use for anything measured in exact days instead of years.
