Body fat percentage tells you something BMI cannot: how much of your body weight is fat versus lean tissue such as muscle, bone, and water. Two people can share the exact same height and weight — and therefore the exact same BMI — while having very different body compositions, with one carrying more muscle and the other carrying more fat. Body fat percentage separates these two people in a way a simple weight-to-height ratio never can, which is why it’s often used alongside BMI rather than instead of it.
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, published by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984 as a low-cost field alternative to lab equipment. Instead of skinfold calipers, water-displacement tanks, or DEXA scanners, it works from a handful of tape-measure readings — height, neck, and waist for men, with hip circumference added for women — run through a formula that estimates body density and converts it into a body fat percentage. It won’t match a lab measurement exactly, but it’s a reasonable, repeatable estimate anyone can take at home with nothing more than a tape measure.
Where and how you measure matters enormously, because a centimeter or two of error at any single site can shift the result by several percentage points. Measure your neck just below the larynx, at the narrowest point of the neck. Measure your waist at navel height, keeping the tape level all the way around your torso rather than tilted. Measure your hip circumference at its widest point, roughly across the buttocks. In every case, wrap the tape snugly against the skin — enough to remove slack, but never cinched tight enough to compress soft tissue. A tape pulled too tight will flatter your waist and inflate your apparent leanness; a loose tape does the opposite and makes you look fatter than you are.
Men and women are scored against different category tables because they carry different amounts of essential fat by biological necessity. Women’s bodies require more fat to support hormone production and reproductive function, so a body fat percentage that would be unusually low for a man is normal, even healthy, for a woman. Using one shared scale for both sexes would systematically misclassify most women as leaner or fatter than they actually are relative to their own healthy baseline, which is why the essential, athletic, fitness, average, and higher-risk bands sit at different numbers for each sex.
Circumference-based methods like this one are an estimate, not a diagnostic measurement. Compared with reference methods such as DEXA scans (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) or hydrostatic underwater weighing, the Navy equations are usually quoted with a standard error of the estimate of 3 to 4 percentage points of body fat, and that error isn’t uniform — people with an unusual fat distribution, very high or very low muscle mass, or an atypical body shape tend to see larger discrepancies than average. Your waist and other circumferences also shift naturally through the day: after a large meal, with fluid retention, or depending on the time of day you measure, readings can differ by a centimeter or more without any real change in body composition.
Because of this natural variability, treat any single reading as a rough snapshot rather than a precise, final fact. What’s genuinely useful is measuring under the same conditions every time — the same time of day, the same tape tension, ideally first thing in the morning before eating, drinking, or exercising — and tracking the trend over several weeks or months. A consistent downward or upward trend in the numbers tells you far more about real changes in your body composition than any single reading ever can.
The most common way this number gets misused is chasing it downward. Body fat below the essential range can impair hormone function, immune health, and organ function, so "lower is better" stops being true well before the scale runs out, and the category labels here describe a range rather than a verdict on how you look or how hard you have worked. The useful next step is to turn one number into a series: write down today’s tape measurements next to the result, repeat them every 2 to 4 weeks under the same conditions, and read the trend instead of the reading. If that trend worries you, or if you are making decisions about weight or training around it, take the measurements themselves to a doctor or another qualified professional — a run of tape readings tells them far more than a single estimate does.

- It’s a reasonable field estimate, generally within a few percentage points of lab methods like DEXA for most people, but it’s not lab-grade precision. Measurement technique matters more than the formula itself — a sloppy measurement can throw off the result more than the method’s inherent margin of error. Treat the number as a useful estimate, not an exact figure.
- Why do I need to measure my hip if I’m a man?
- You don’t — the male formula only uses height, neck, and waist, so the hip field simply isn’t part of the calculation for men. It’s only required for women, whose formula includes hip circumference alongside waist and neck. That’s why the hip field is marked as optional for men in this calculator.
- Should I pull the tape measure tight when measuring?
- No — the tape should sit snugly against your skin with no slack, but it shouldn’t compress the soft tissue underneath. Pulling it tight artificially shrinks your reading and makes your body fat percentage look lower than it actually is. Aim for the same gentle tension every time you measure so your results stay comparable.
- Why did my body fat percentage change a lot between two measurements?
- Waist and other circumferences shift naturally throughout the day due to meals, hydration, and even where you are in your daily routine, so a swing of a percentage point or two between measurements is normal and doesn’t mean your body composition actually changed. For consistent tracking, measure at the same time of day under similar conditions, ideally first thing in the morning. Look at the trend over weeks rather than reacting to any single reading.

The two are most useful together: BMI is faster to calculate and track, while body fat percentage helps explain cases where BMI alone would be misleading, such as for very muscular or very lean individuals.
