Convert Inches to Centimeters (in to cm)

This direction is for when you already have a measurement in inches — a US product spec, a screen size, a height written as feet and inches — and need to translate it into centimeters for a metric context: comparing it to a room's dimensions, filling in a metric form, or understanding an imported product's actual size.

Human height is usually written as feet and inches rather than a single decimal — "5 feet 9 inches," shown as 5′9″ — rather than "5.75 feet." To convert that to centimeters, first turn the inches into a single total (5 × 12 + 9 = 69 in), then apply the 2.54 cm factor: 69 × 2.54 = 175.26 cm.

Screen sizes are the other place this conversion comes up constantly: TVs and monitors are advertised in inches worldwide — a 55-inch TV, a 27-inch monitor — even in fully metric countries, because the convention predates most countries' adoption of the metric system. Converting 55 in to cm (139.7 cm) tells you the actual diagonal size to check against wall or desk space, which manufacturers rarely list directly.

Imported products, especially from the US, often list dimensions in inches on the box or spec sheet. Converting those figures to centimeters before ordering is the most reliable way to know whether a shelf, appliance, or piece of furniture will actually fit a space measured in the metric units used almost everywhere outside the US.

Luggage is a place where one allowance is published in two units. US carriers typically state a carry-on limit as 22 × 14 × 9 inches, which is 55.9 × 35.6 × 22.9 cm, and set the checked-bag limit as a total of 62 linear inches — length plus width plus height — or 157.5 cm. A case advertised in centimetres has to be converted before the two can be compared: a bag built to the common 55 × 40 × 20 cm cabin rule is inside the 22 in length, but its 40 cm width is about 1.7 in over the 14 in figure.
