Convert Centimeters to Inches (cm to in)

This direction is for when you already have a measurement in centimeters and need to work with it in inches — checking whether furniture, a screen, or clothing ordered from a US or UK retailer will fit, filling in a height field on a US form, or following a British or American sewing pattern that lists dimensions in inches.

Height is the most common case. Someone who knows their height in centimeters — say, 170 cm — often needs to state it in feet and inches for a US form or profile. 170 cm converts to 66.93 in, which splits into 5 ft and 6.93 in; round the leftover to the nearest whole inch (5 ft 7 in) since forms rarely accept a decimal inch.

The result here is a decimal — 0.625 in, for example — but US tape measures and rulers are marked in binary fractions: halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths. To read a decimal result on a physical ruler, multiply it by 16 and round: 0.625 × 16 = 10, so it lines up with the 10/16 mark, which simplifies to 5/8 in.

Paper and screen sizes trigger this conversion too: A4 paper (29.7 cm long) becomes relevant when comparing it with US Letter (11 in), and a laptop or monitor measured in centimeters needs converting to inches to compare against a manufacturer's advertised screen size, which is always quoted in inches even in metric countries.

Clothing sizes turn this conversion into part of a purchase. US and UK denim is labelled by waist and inside leg in inches, so a waist measured at 81 cm is 31.9 in and lands on a W32, and an 81 cm inside leg is an L32; belts from the same retailers are sized in the same inch steps. Measuring in centimetres and converting once is steadier than reading a brand's size chart, because brands round those charts differently and a rounded label can sit a full centimetre from the body measurement.
