How it works

Ovulation is the moment in a menstrual cycle when a mature egg is released from the ovary. Before that release, the body moves through the follicular phase, during which a follicle matures and estrogen rises; this is the part of the cycle that varies most in length from person to person and from month to month. After ovulation, the body enters the luteal phase, when the ruptured follicle forms a temporary structure called the corpus luteum that produces progesterone to prepare the uterine lining for a possible pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, progesterone falls and menstruation begins, starting the cycle over.

The fact this calculator leans on is that the luteal phase — the stretch from ovulation to the next period — varies far less than the first half of the cycle does. Nearly all of the variation in cycle length happens before ovulation, in the follicular phase, not after it. That is why the reliable way to estimate ovulation is to count backward from the next expected period using a fixed luteal phase, rather than dividing the whole cycle evenly. What "fixed" means here deserves care, though. This is also why the calculation is "cycle length minus 14 days" and not "cycle length divided by two." Dividing by two only happens to work for a textbook 28-day cycle, where 28 ÷ 2 also equals 14. For anyone with a 32-day cycle, dividing by two would suggest ovulation around day 16, but because the luteal phase still runs about 14 days, ovulation actually tends to occur closer to day 18. The longer or shorter your cycle is compared to 28 days, the more that gap between the two methods grows, and the "divide by two" shortcut becomes progressively less accurate.
