Convert Ounces to Grams (oz to g)

This direction is for when you already have a weight in ounces — a US recipe measurement, a food label, a burger patty size — and need it in grams for a metric recipe, a kitchen scale that only shows grams, or a nutrition comparison against a non-US product.

US food labels list weight in ounces constantly: a burger patty is often sold as "4 oz," a can of tuna might say "5 oz drained weight," and deli meat is frequently sliced to order in ounces. A 4 oz patty converts to about 113.4 g, and knowing this lets you compare it directly against a metric recipe or nutrition label that lists grams instead.

This "oz" is the avoirdupois ounce, a unit of weight — it is not the fluid ounce (a volume measurement for liquids) and not the troy ounce (a heavier unit reserved for precious metals like gold and silver). Mixing these up is one of the most common unit mistakes: a "4 oz" burger patty and "4 fl oz" of milk are entirely different quantities of entirely different things, and a troy ounce of gold (31.1 g) is about 10% heavier than an avoirdupois ounce of the same number.

US recipes also frequently reference "1 lb" as shorthand for 16 oz — a pound of ground beef, for instance — so converting the ounce figure to grams (453.6 g for a full pound) is often the fastest way to scale a US recipe for a metric kitchen.

American recipes often call for a package rather than a weight: one 8 oz package of cream cheese, a 4 oz bar of baking chocolate, a 14.5 oz can of tomatoes. Outside the US those products come in metric packs that are close but never identical, so the conversion is what tells you how much of a 200 g pack to use. An 8 oz package is 226.8 g, a 4 oz bar is 113.4 g, and a 14.5 oz can is about 411 g, which is why swapping in a 400 g tin leaves a recipe slightly drier than intended.
